MEET THE BEEKEEPER
Melissa Rodelo Gilpin is the founder of Rancho Calaveras Honey Company, a small-batch honey brand rooted in California’s Sierra Foothills. Her connection to the land began early, growing up surrounded by open space, orchards, olive groves, and horses—an environment that shaped her respect for agriculture and sustainability.
After returning to her family ranch, Melissa began planting an olive grove and studying the natural systems that support it. That curiosity led her to honeybees—their essential role in pollination, biodiversity, and regenerative farming. What started as research quickly evolved into a passion.
Through hands-on beekeeping courses and mentorship, Melissa built her first hives and laid the foundation for Rancho Calaveras Honey Company. Every jar reflects a commitment to thoughtful stewardship, quality, and place.
“Bringing the bees home in the front seat of my car felt like the beginning of something meaningful.”
A drive into town led to an unexpected find—a vintage 1975 Hale horse trailer resting on a nearby ranch. She left a note on a bale of hay, hoping for a response. When the call came, she couldn’t wait.
The trailer sparked memories of her horse, Amaretta, and a deep connection to ranch life. Restoration began almost immediately, reimagining it as a distinctive way to transport and share her honey.
